Rockhampton races preview August 9

SEVEN races on the TAB card at Rockhampton on Thursday and the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Darryn Nufer previews the meeting.

Race 1

Small field to kick off proceedings. Aloof’s Turf (4) wasn’t beaten far in a blanket finish at Townsville last time and should get a good run up on the pace. Barbados Storm (3) stormed home (pardon the pun) to win at Townsville last start and a repeat of that performance would see him fighting out the finish. Extra Cover (1) will set the tempo and if able to dictate can kick on strongly. Hulk Henry (5) closed off nicely in the race won by Poetic Heart here last Thursday but tempo could be vastly different today.

SELECTIONS: Aloof’s Turf; Barbados Storm; Extra Cover; Hulk Henry.

Race 2

Legal Ties (1) is a model of consistency so you know what you’re going to get with her and she’s particularly well in after the claim. Gypsy Toff (4) looked like she could be anything as a two-year-old and she’ll probably get better with time. Warmed up for return with a 900m trial win here last Friday. Be surprised if the winner doesn’t come from those two. Craiglea Galio (2) ran okay behind Legal Ties two back. Great Fox (6) next best.

SELECTIONS: Legal Ties; Gypsy Toff; Craiglea Galio; Great Fox.

Race 3

The former Chris Waller-trained Blazeray (5) looked good winning a 900m trial here last Friday and could be ready to show up. Claim is a plus. The testing material will be Dangerous Desire (3) who will be running on hard at the business end. Think the winner comes from those two. Beraht (1) won well at Townsville last start and drawn ideally. That’s Her I Think (6) finished off well behind a smart one here last week. Don’t discount Nasty Gal (4) who could run into the money at odds.

SELECTIONS: Blazeray; Dangerous Desire; Beraht; That’s Her I Think.

Race 4

King Torio (3) is ready to win and reckon he’ll appreciate being back on top of the ground today. Making him the best bet of the day. Ex-Michael Costa galloper Malkara (1) hasn’t done a lot wrong since joining Clint Thompson and will be in the firing line for a long way. Mr Boxvale (2) has put two victories together on end and can’t knock winning form. No Effort Needed (6) might be ready to run an improved race.

SELECTIONS: King Torio; Malkara; Mr Boxvale; No Effort Needed.

Race 5

D-Day is looming for a couple of these, I speak of Colorado River (4) and Military Prince (6). Colorado River is not one of my horses and if he doesn’t salute today it will stay that way. Military Prince is back to 1400m which is more suitable, but again is running out of chances. Daunting Queen (10) is always around the mark but just seems to find one or two better. Changing Currency (3) will appreciate good draw and claim. Starbeats (12) is never too far away but does have awkward alley to contend with.

SELECTIONS: Colorado River; Military Prince; Daunting Queen; Changing Currency.

Race 6

Ricky Vale’s Now Ask Me (3) just missed last start here and only needs a repeat of that effort to figure. Note Poetic Heart has since franked that form. On an each-way basis think Gladishing (11) can give a sight here at odds. He has run some handy races in stronger grade and this is his level. Wouldn’t let Little Hunter (8) get under your guard especially if value offered. Bon for Glory (2) is a bit of a non-winner (but it’s that kind of race) and have to respect the Toowoomba stable venturing north.

SELECTIONS: Now Ask Me; Gladishing; Little Hunter; Bon For Glory.

Race 7

A Littlebittamagic (4) has been racing well of late and this doesn’t look an overly strong affair. Fortyshort (10) hasn’t done much wrong at two career starts to date. Ana’s Idol (6) returned in good order winning here recently and Mick Attard might just have turned her around. Superior Dragon (5) could run an improved race. If you can go wide include Firestar Phoenix (9) in multiples.

SELECTIONS: A Littlebittamagic; Fortyshort; Ana’s Idol; Superior Dragon.

BEST BET: King Torio

BEST ROUGHIE: Gladishing

QUADDIE: 1, 3/Field/2, 3, 8, 11/1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 (Cost $58 for 10%)
