Rockhampton races preview Breeders’ Plate Day

SEVEN races on the card for 2YO Breeders’ Plate Day and the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Darryn Nufer previews the meeting.

Race 1 – All bar one of these fillies (Brigalow Queen) seen at the trials or races. Hard not to like the Rocky trial win of Better Reflection a month ago and will be hard to beat on that. Lepreezy has shown great early speed in her trials but the query will be running out the 1050m. Lyle Rowe pair Whitty Girl and Bonny’s Treasure may be the dangers to Better Reflection if there are any.

SELECTIONS: Better Reflection; Lepreezy; Whitty Girl; Bonny’s Treasure.

Race 2 – All except visitors Hezhome and Mia Singa seen at the trials. Master Jamie ran second to Better Reflection (favourite race 1) in debut trial and then won subsequent trial in impressive fashion. The Stockbroker is a full brother to the Button Barn’s ill-fated promising juvenile The Bank Manager and looks to have improvement to come from two trial seconds. Note both Master Jamie and The Stockbroker have drawn the inside two gates which is to their advantage. Malvagio beat Mad Irish Tycoon winning a trial and suspect the latter (not engaged today) goes alright. Craiglea Baron hasn’t been far away in trials.

SELECTIONS: Master Jamie; The Stockbroker; Malvagio; Craiglea Baron.

Race 3 – Toecanargie Man looks the one, coming off a good last start win this course and will carry half a kilo less from a good gate and Les Tilley sticks. Golfing ran second behind Toecanargie Man last time so repeat puts him in it. Jabrook will suck you in but the stats show that she does find it hard to win. Deus a last start Mackay winner who isn’t without a show.

SELECTIONS: Toecanargie Man; Golfing; Jabrook; Deus.

Race 4 – Small Open field but the race of the day. Rocky Cup heroine Mamselle Corday resumes and takes on stablemate Paradis Imperial who we know is above average and she just looks so well weighted in these events at present. Going with her. The old marvel Court Clown gave Paradis Imperial a huge fright last time and even with the hefty weight impost (60.5kg) he can do so again. Mamselle Corday goes well fresh (3 wins from 7 first-up) so don’t underestimate. Gypsy Secret has been a great horse for connections and invariably runs well.

SELECTIONS: Paradis Imperial; Court Clown; Mamselle Corday; Gypsy Secret.

Race 5 – The big plunge almost came off with Frugal last start and this looks his race to go one better. Reconis wasn’t bad behind Tru Blu Tango here last time and the latter has since gone on to win again at the Sunny Coast. Paible should be better for her debut run. Including Whoosh in the numbers but couldn’t back him with stolen money.

SELECTIONS: Frugal; Reconis; Paible; Whoosh.

Race 6 – Outside of the Open race the battle between Gypsy Toff and Marway is the other highlight of the day. Gypsy Toff gets up where it hurts with 60.5kg which is a lot for a three-year-old filly to lump. Not saying she can’t but would rather go with the emerging Marway who has been running time and might still have some upwards to come. Last Chance has been consistent without winning. Draws to get a nice run. Ditto Taraki.

SELECTIONS: Marway; Gypsy Toff; Last Chance; Taraki.

Race 7 – Like ‘Em Sassy should get a good run from the gate and jockey might have already punched home a winner or two by this stage. Durif has to carry 62.5kg to win but can’t say he couldn’t. Justalad could run on but he can be a tease. No Effort Needed could be an improver.

SELECTIONS: Like ‘Em Sassy; Durif; Justalad; No Effort Needed.
