Rockhampton races preview February 7
February 7, 2019
SEVEN races on the TAB card at Rockhampton today and the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Darryn Nufer previews the meeting.
Race 1 – Intriguing race for the two-year-olds to kick off the day. Tycoon Flyer won at the last meeting here, only a field of three that day but now third run in wouldn’t think he would have gone backwards. The big watch is The Stockbroker who probably starts favourite and the stable has an opinion of him. Not raced since November and 1100m first-up will test his fitness but he may well be better than them. Graeme Green’s duo Astral Knight and Miss Clair among the chances. Interesting runner is Stuart Kendrick’s visitor Investible who debuts with no flash trial form so it’s hard to get a line on him – market probably the best guide.
SELECTIONS: Tycoon Flyer; The Stockbroker; Miss Clair; Astral Knight.
Race 2 – Race decimated by scratchings. Spring Creek is the obvious having won three on the bounce. If the track deteriorates then Tambo’s Heart comes into play more as a danger. I Can I Will I Am tends to need things to go his way but in a field of three may just get that.
SELECTIONS: Spring Creek; Tambo’s Heart; I Can I Will I Am.
Race 3 – Barachiel is the obvious here on the back of his form and it’s hard to go past him. Uthred turned his form around last start but unlike Barachiel he’s not the most honest character. Helluva Hoffa will get back and be doing his best work late here first-up from a break. My nemesis Rise To Fame could be a blowout hope but I’m sick of coming into him.
SELECTIONS: Barachiel; Uthred; Helluva Hoffa; Rise To Fame.
Race 4 – What a beaut race for the three-year-olds with the clash of Cyclone Topgirl, Gypsy Toff and The Tax Accountant. Gypsy Toff (pictured) blew away her rivals here last time and while this is tougher why can’t she continue on her winning ways? Cyclone Topgirl trialled up behind Uthred (next home Gypsy Secret) in preparation for her return and she’s unbeaten from two goes this track/distance (Gypsy Toff unbeaten from 4). What a race! If they overdo it up front then Chanamaro will be closing off late. Haven’t even got to The Tax Accountant yet who could let them know at some stage that he’s in the race. Chances don’t end there either as if track deteriorates then the greys Gracie Belle and Our Top Shelf aren’t out of it. This is dead-set the best race so far in 2019 at Callaghan Park!
SELECTIONS: Gypsy Toff; Cyclone Topgirl; Chanamaro; The Tax Accountant.
Race 5 – A maiden event that won’t excite too many outside of those competing in it. Going To Vegas has had a few chances but perhaps worth an each-way ticket at value. Kaos Agent is the query making his debut here – watch market. Say Please probably indicated she wasn’t far off cracking a maiden with her last start second. Annmarie’s overall record is not flash but neither is this race.
SELECTIONS: Going To Vegas; Kaos Agent; Say Please; Annmarie.
Race 6 – This looks a suitable assignment for Damn Fine who hasn’t been far away of late and drawn to get a good sit. Worth The Time could be value and has each-way claims on recent runs. Respecting the Olivia Cairns visitor Point Forward who rarely runs poorly. Bold Sam comes off back-to-back seconds and should get a good run in transit.
SELECTIONS: Damn Fine; Worth The Time; Point Forward; Bold Sam.
Race 7 – Throwing one in a bit from left-field in Sirius Black who is not one of my horses but could be finishing the race off hard if afforded an economical trip. Affected ground would be a plus for Shenron who has been racing well and Stanley a significant jockey booking. Tevye ran well in Class 4 grade last time and that shapes as good form for this – sting out no issue. Cash Strapped a query runner first-up.
SELECTIONS: Sirius Black; Shenron; Tevye; Cash Strapped.
