Rockhampton Races Preview Rocky Amateurs Day
May 11, 2019
SEVEN races on the TAB card at Rockhampton today and the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s Darryn Nufer previews the meeting.
Race 1 – Arctic Circle looks well placed here at the weights and form reads well for this. Ruby Ray benefits from the 3kg claim for Tom Doyle who has been riding well here of late. Mr Resetti is a last start winner and jockey sticks. Hulk Henry could get into the placings.
SELECTIONS: Arctic Circle; Ruby Ray; Mr Resetti; Hulk Henry.
Race 2 – Pretty much whatever Sunny Coast trainer Darryl Hansen has brought here of late has won so expect his Better Than Gold, off good southern form and drawn well, to be well supported. Nobody Better, like the top selection is another Better Than Ready juvenile who is capable of running an improved race. Tales Of Epsilon has always shown some ability and there is a maiden in him somewhere soon. Crime Boss should feature from a good draw.
SELECTIONS: Better Than Gold; Nobody Better; Tales Of Epsilon; Crime Boss.
Race 3 – Mr Phenomenal gets in well here after the 2kg claim for Elly Smith and she knows the horse which is a plus. He’s a big bugger and just needs to find open spaces to be charging at them at the business end. Daunting Queen is in great form and the 3kg claim should help but does have a wide alley to overcome. Flat To Stack should get a nice run from the draw and can be running on. Beat The Beast probably doesn’t want the track too firm but among the chances.
SELECTIONS: Mr Phenomenal; Daunting Queen; Flat To Stack; Beat The Beast.
Race 4 – Would be expecting Now Ask Me to be better for the one run back from a spell. Capable of contesting something over Carnival if she can reproduce her form from last prep and on that basis you’d like to see her win or go very close here. Bound To Me tends to race well here and has a turn of foot on his day. Tevye scored at big odds last time and if reproduces that kind of run again can feature. Would be keeping a close eye on a couple resuming in Darryl Gardiner’s Kruger and Tim Cook’s Hidden Goddess who could both be worth a spec at odds.
SELECTIONS: Now Ask Me; Bound To Me; Tevye; Hidden Goddess.
Race 5 – Epic Rant has strung two wins together down south and if shows up with his A-game should be hard to beat. Expect he’s on a Rocky Cup path this Winter. French Hussler is a grand campaigner and invariably runs well in these races. Poetic Heart has been racing well and wouldn’t rule him out of giving some cheek. Macho Tycoon tends to be underrated and you can never leave him out.
SELECTIONS: Epic Rant; French Hussler; Poetic Heart; Macho Tycoon.
Race 6 – Chanamaro caught the eye in a recent trial and wouldn’t surprise if he runs a good race first-up. Stanley a positive booking and one for each-way players. That man D Hansen has Lickety Lachie here and this is a drop in grade for him. Our Top Shelf is a bit hard to catch but capable of running on. Garnett Taylor has Bold Sensation engaged and his horses invariably run well here.
SELECTIONS: Chanamaro; Lickety Lachie; Our Top Shelf; Bold Sensation.
Race 7 – Going with Spring Creek (pictured inside) to turn the tables on her stablemate Barachiel. The former is on a Rocky Newmarket path and she certainly has the ability to be featuring here during Carnival time so you’d expect her to give this a shake. Barachiel is rarely ever out of the money and always runs on. Watch for Conca Del Sogno getting home late but will improve off whatever he does here first-up. Casino Thoughts was a forgive run last time and capable of bouncing back.
SELECTIONS: Spring Creek; Barachiel; Conca Del Sogno; Casino Thoughts.
