Maotai: Aquis Farm’s confirmed slot holder for The Archer.

Much Rockhampton attention will focus on Saturday’s Royal Randwick races where Maotai, Aquis Farm’s confirmed slot holder for The Archer ($775K) will have his final lead up for the April 30 extravaganza.
Slots are being announced “thick and fast” for The Archer WFA (1300m) on what will historically be Rockhampton’s richest race day programmed at Callaghan Park on that Sunday.
Maotai, named after a baijiu – a distilled Chinese liquor, will be the toast for exuberant celebrations if the Kacy Fogden, Canungra trained 4YO Not A Single Doubt gelding can win The Archer.
Already, Maotai which Aquis Farm purchased for $425K at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale is a four times winner from 15 starts returning $374,700 in prize purses.
On Saturday’s $2M glamour Randwick program, Maotai, a Sydney winner two starts back will contest an up-market $150,000 BM 88 (1200m) where he has been allotted 60.5kg.
He comes into the Randwick race after winning a Rosehill 1350m BM 88 on March 11 followed by a game second there to Tamberlane over 1400m n March 25.
In both those races he was partnered by Ryan Maloney, while earlier in his career he was a dual Randwick winner over 1000 and 1200 metres for Hugh Bowman and Sam Clipperton.
It seems Ryan Maloney won’t be available for Maotai in The Archer at Callaghan Park where from just three race rides, he has ridden a winner an two placegetters.
“No unfortunately Ryan will be riding David Vandyke’s horse Weona Smartone in The Archer. We have a few jockeys in the pipeline but still waiting on confirmation”, Kacy Fogden said late on Tuesday.
As an aside, Maloney 37, is enjoying a stellar season with 83 winners so far in a career that includes a GR 1 win on Alligator Blood among his CV of over 1300 winners.
Maotai’s racing style, whereby consistently in his races he either leads or positions “on the speed” will be advantageous to his prospects in The Archer.
It’s a point that Kacy Fogden, who also is a member of the syndicate which races the sprinter concurs with.
“Absolutely, his (Maotai) ability to sit on pace will help although I hear it’s a pretty long straight in Rockhampton”, Fogden said,
In other news on The Archer, two other confirmed runners Soxagon and Emerald Kingdom are among the entries for Saturday’s $160K Ascot Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.
In a quality entry of 16, Mark Currie trained Soxagon has 59.5kg while Desleigh Forster’s Emerald Kingdom last year’ inaugural The Archer winner, will carry 59kg.
As both have been spelling, The Ascot seems an ideal race to fine tune them towards The Archer which will have stand alone SYY & TAB Sunday status in just over a fortnight’s time.
In what has been a jammed pack agenda for CQ and NQ racing, the RJC has a seven race TAB card featured on Thursday two days after today’s Tuesday’s Mackay races.
As well the Townsville Turf Club has a TAB race card scheduled for this coming Saturday.
