Premier Rockhampton apprentice jockey Tahlia Fenlon will be anxious to make up for lost time when she gets back among the swing of things with a full book of seven rides at the Mackay Turf Club’s TAB card on Tuesday.
Fenlon 20, has endured an interrupted start to the 2023-24 racing season after undergoing surgery for appendicitis and then having further health issues in the weeks after.
This was diagnosed as an infection in the stomach lining which kept Tahlia out of the saddle for longer than she would have hoped.
Sadly, Tahlia also had to grieve for the loss of her beloved grandfather Ray Fenlon earlier last month.
As such, Tahlia has been off the race riding landscape for most of August after winning a feature race during the first week of the month on the John Manzelmann trained Savvy Legend.
Currently on extended loan to Brisbane trainer Chris Munce, last Saturday night at Toowoomba, she resumed just taking a single ride only to go under in a photo finish for second on Rejoiced.
Tahlia will certainly up the ante at Mackay where five of her riding engagements are for the Manzelmann stable which is really firing in the opening salvo month of the 2023-24 season with 14 winners.
She will also have an engagement for John’s close relative, the trainer Joshua Manzelmann on Such A Whit (Race 6-TAB 4).
Her other mount is for Rockhampton trainer Tom Smith on Roznamla (NZ) (R 3 – TAB 5).
Speaking from Brisbane this afternoon, Tahlia said she was looking forward to what should be a very busy week on the northern circuit.
“I am feeling heaps better and will put the last month behind me now. John (Manzelmann) has asked me to come up and ride at the Cairns Amateurs Carnival on Friday and Saturday so I will be riding there. I expect Savvy Legend will be running in the Cup”, Tahlia Fenlon said.
John Manzelmann has 10 horses nominated for the two days at Cairns which has attracted 259 entries with almost $700,00 prizemoney on offer.
When asked to nominate what she considered to be her best winning prospect at Mackay races on Tuesday, Tahlia Fenlon had this to say – “I’ve only had a brief look at them so far. You never really know with John’s horses as you can have a fair bit of luck with them “, she said.
She has had just that winning 10 races for the stable.
Mackay has also been a lucky track for Fenlon at which she has ridden 34 winners, the most on any track in accruing her career tally of 117 winners.
Other Rockhampton jockeys heading the 335km road trip up the Bruce Highway to ride at Mackay are Tasha Chambers, Brooke Johnson, Warwick Satherley and Erin Molloy.
Callaghan Park trainers Adrian Coome, Clinton Taylor, Nick Walsh, Stephen Rundle, Jamie McConachy, Tom Smith, Mark Cochrane, Jared Wehlow, Zoe Hohn, Allan Jones, Tim Cook, Sileas Green and Peter Fleming will saddle up 20 of the 86 acceptors at the Mackay meeting.
Based on previous trends, multiple winners will emanate from Callaghan Park at the Mackay Turf Club’s meeting.
