Toowoomba trainer Mark Currie will arrive in Rockhampton later this month with a team of gallopers including his top hopes for the TAB Rockhampton Cup and One Syndications Newmarket Handicap.

Currie is likely to bring Eagle Farm track record holder Harbourmaster for the Cup and very talented sprinter-miler Tavs for the Newmarket.

The trainer is expected to have 15 -16 horses at Callaghan Park to zero in on the $20,000 Trainers Bonus, awarded to the most successful trainer over the two-day carnival.

Harbourmaster ploughed through the heavy track on 31 May to win the $85,000 BM 78 (1400m) at Eagle Farm under Craig Williams, beating the Michael and Wayne Hawkes trained Terrestar and Stuart Kendrick’s Redford. A former Victorian galloper with wins on metropolitan tracks up to 1500m in Melbourne and Adelaide, Harbourmaster has been working his way through the grades this preparation. The 6YO Cable Bay gelding posted its first Queensland victory in a Class 3 Handicap (1300m) at Toowoomba’s Clifford Park last November and his Eagle Farm triumph in track record time over 1500m was his second win last preparation.

Dundeel 4YO Tavs goes on show in Saturday’s Listed $150,000 Spear Chief Handicap (1500m). Tavs is a $6.00 chance in the big race at Eagle Farm and will be ridden by Anglea Jones. The galloper has won two of his last three races and is in great form.

A winner of $275,000, Tavs put together back-to-back wins April and May at Eagle Farm with both races over 1400m. He was far from disgraced at his latest start when he came from an outside alley to run third to The Inflictor in a BM85 (1350m) at Doomben. He was wide into the straight and beaten 2.5 lengths. Tavs who had two wins in New South Wales and a win in the ACT to its credit before racing in Queensland, looks like an ideal Newmarket chance.

The One Syndications Newmarket is over 1300 metres on 4 July and the TAB Rockhampton Cup is raced from the 1600 metre start on 5 July.
