Have horse will travel – Article by Tony McMahon

If there was a prize for reward for effort, Miles based journeyman jockey Luke Miller and Mackay trainer John Manzelmann would certainly qualify this weekend. Early on Friday morning Miller will drive the 449km five hours to Rockhampton races where he has just the two rides – Ombre Volante and Oakfield Target for Wandoan trainer Will Louden. That will be Miller’ first leg of a marathon 1828km drive he will undertake on Friday and Saturday. That’s because Luke has five rides at Birdsville races on Sunday and another six there on Monday. By the time Luke gets home to Miles on Tuesday he will have driven 2515km. After his last Rocky ride on Friday, he heads west to Longreach (686km -7.5 hours) for shut eye before motoring off to Birdsville for another (694km -7.5 hours) hike in the early hours of Sunday Morning. ‘’My motto is I have a saddle will travel”, Luke said.
Incidentally, Mackay trainer John Manzelmann, a regular at Callaghan Park has 19 different horses starting at Birdsville over the two days with many to be ridden by Jade Doolan. Now that represents a round trip of 2954km. I complain about driving the 35km from Stanwell to Callaghan Park.
