Racing Around Rocky –

This is the first edition of a new column compiled by Tony McMahon titled RACING AROUND ROCKY which will provide regular updates in a series of news briefs pertaining to racing in the Rockhampton region. Trust you like it!

Sunshine Coast trainer Tom Button reports that his brave 2YO Jemeldi will now spell following his courageous third in last Saturday’s $202,000 Skyline GR 2 Stakes (1200m) on a rain sodden Randwick track. A big contingent of his Rockhampton owners present screamed themselves hoarse when Jemeldi loomed up to win half way down the Randwick straight.  “He gave us all a great buzz. It was a gut buster of a run and he will spell now at our new facility of Fenwick Farm, Canungra. We will plan some races for him after that”, Button said. By all reports some of the Rocky owners may need a spell as well after post-race celebrations. Jemeldi floated back to Queensland on Sunday and was dropped off at Fenwick Farm. Button will transfer his operation to the state-of-the-art facility in the Gold Coast Hinterland next month.

Plans are askew as to whether Sweet Dolly progresses to the $500K QTIS Jewel 3YO Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast later in March. Trainer Kevin Hansen believes what he described as shocking heat took its toll on the prized filly in the hours that led up to her comeback third at Mackay last Saturday. “She wasn’t herself and was stirry and ran half a race before it started as it was a terrible day. She pulled up a little muscle sore – nothing serious and in no way connected with her previous injury. Not too sure about the Jewel. Dolly will have a gallop probably next week and we will see then”, Hansen said. He revealed there are some alluring races coming up for Sweet Dolly in April.

While there are doubts about Sweet Dolly re the QTIS Jewel at the Gold Coast not so Clinton Taylor’s Magnetic Drive which beat Tim Cook’s Augustawynd and Sweet Dolly in the Mackay Qualifier. “Pulled up well after the run and the boys (owners) decided they want to go for the Coast race. I’ll freshen her now and with three weeks before the race it looks ideal”, Taylor said. He also won with Brigalow Boy at Mackay. They gave Clinton Taylor a tally of 28 winners for the season in Queensland. Clinton and his hard-working wife Erin deserve all the success they achieve.

After concerns about small nominations for Rockhampton race meetings of late there has been an upsurge for this Friday’s coming RJC meeting. There are 81 nominations for the day. The 2YO Maiden (1100m) has 14 entries the biggest for the season at Callaghan Park. Field sizes have been down for 2YO’s not just at Rockhampton. With the QTIS bonus prize money so lucrative little wonder many trainers are no longer pushing their babies for early season returns and are being more patient. I recall the days of as many as nine qualifying 2YO trials for the Carlton Plate each October at Callaghan Park. I used to broadcast them. They were run on a Sunday with big fields and huge crowds in attendance. It was like a race day. First and second placegetters in the trials progressed to the Carlton 2YO Plate. Field entry was determined by qualifying trial times for placegetters. No QTIS or QRIS as it was known as then bonus prizemoney in those days in the late eighties/early nineties.

Another Rocky trainer more than likely Gold Coast bound this time for the $500K QTIS 2YO Jewel is Tom Smith. His gelding Better Rain raced by Callide Valley stalwarts Stewie Nobbs and John Howard qualified through a one-act affair win at Callaghan Park last Friday. Tom Smith just 21 is really going places and his move to Belroma his new stables at Nerimbera will ensure that further success follows him along the way.

The 2022 Capricornia Yearling Sales catalogue is now available online. It reveals that there are 121 entries for the sale at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on Sunday, April 10. So, check it out online and just google the title into your search engine. If this old dinosaur who is not tech savvy can find it so can you.
