Sunday’s 11 race megacard will commence at 10.55am with the last just over six hours later at 4.58pm. Sunday’s meeting will be the second biggest ever staged at Callaghan Park, a close runner-up to a revamped 12 race Capricornia Yearling Sales program held there in late April this year brought about by a similar scenario. Some 142 horses have been declared to start on Sunday with star galloper Namazu still a possibility of contesting the $35K TAB Tattersalls Gold Cup (1600m) subject to improving weather and track conditions. The BMO is forecasting decreasing rain in Rockhampton over Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the prospects of 0-6mm in total over those three days which is good news for all concerned with Sunday’s big race day.

Good to see former Rocky apprentice Nikki Olzard back in the region and now indentured to trainer Raymond Williams at Emerald. Their association got off to a flying start when they combined to win with Devil Enuff and Motion Legend ($30K Cup) at the annual McKinlay races out there last Saturday.  McKinlay is 1105km north-west of Rockhampton. I can vouch for that as I was guest race caller out there for a couple of years. Nikki Olzard is a very talented young jockey and I wish her well. As for Raymond Williams who I remember interviewing as a schoolboy apprentice jockey out at Emerald one day 35 years ago, he is a more than capable trainer. Check out his record. Ray has a freakish record with older horses, such as 9YO Ahwahneechee which contests his fourth consecutive Battle Of The Bush Final in Brisbane on Saturday. Ahwahneechee finished third in 2012. Rocky jockey Ashley Butler rides the John Manzelmann trained top weight, the widely travelled former Brisbane, Sydney, Hong Kong and Queensland bush galloper Tiger Legend which is the BOTB Number 1.

Attractive race meeting at Ferguson Park racecourse Gladstone on Saturday with Rocky connections taking part. Also, a sprinkling of them out west where they will be having a whale of a time at the annual Alpha races.

Happy Horses everyone and see you at Callaghan Park on Sunday.

Tony McMahon.
