The Rockhampton Jockey Club will present one of its busiest TAB race meetings for some time at Callaghan Park on Thursday (18/5) with an eight-race card commencing at 12.22pm. Fresh from landing her 1000th winner at Callaghan Park at the Rocky Amateurs The Archer race day, former Kiwi Samantha Collett heads 18 individual jockeys riding at the RJC TAB races. Samantha links up again with Dalby father and son trainers Matt and William Kropp. She partners Red Defcon (R 1 – TAB 2), Vast Kama (R 4 – TAB 6), Blue Corner (R 6 – TAB 8), The Crown Man (R 7 – 12) and Yamuza (R 8- TAB 7) for Matt. Her lone ride for William Kropp is Tequila Dancer (R 2 – TAB 4). By the way Samantha was in form winning at Ipswich on Wegobam ($7.00) on Wednesday (17/5).

South Australian jockey Jason “Stubby” Holder made the racing limelight on Saturday with five winners at Morphettville. Wasn’t it a magnificent achievement by Rocky apprentice Brooke Johnson at Bowen some 2566km north on the same day.  Brooke won on her master Clinton Taylor’s pair Attackabeel ($3.10) and So Idelia ($3.20) as well as Mackay trainer Jennifer Hatfield’s Spanish Spirit ($12.00) and Joshua Manzelmann’s Aidenabet ($4.60). That made it 29 wins since her first day’s riding at Thangool on Jul 16, 2022 when Brooke at her third ride won on Benny Crear (former master) trained Grand De Lago. Brooke it the racetrack running and winning as at her second excursion race riding on July 23 at Emerald she rode a winning double on Attackabeel (again) and Imadgic. Proving that was no fluke just a week later at Middlemount on July 30, 2022 another double on Money Travels and Ruffin’It. Brilliant. Brooke down the track will be a hit winning races on the provincial circuit at Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and no doubt Cairns.

Also pleasing to see Rockhampton apprentice young lady Tahlia Fenlon breakthrough for her initial SEQ win aboard the Toby and Trent Edmonds unusually named Cordyceps Miracle ($1.90) at Aquis Park, Gold Coast last Saturday. It was Tahlia’s 109th race winner. She is on loan to Chris Munce, Brisbane from Frederick Smith in Rockhampton for three months and only arrived down there just over a fortnight back. Great tonic for her grandfather Ray (Raimondo) Fenlon who has been, if you will excuse the racing parlance under the vet of late. I know Ray has a great sense of humour – well I hope so anyhow and good health Ray.

Good effort from the Clinton Taylor trained Divine Purpose when third over 2200m in a $50K QTIS 3YO at Ipswich today (17/5). Divine Purpose may have her next start in the GR 1 $700K Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 3. Clinton’s father the trainer Garnett Taylor finished second with CQ owned Diamond Diva behind Winning Ways in the Queensland Oaks in 2019. For Dawson Diva’s Callide Valley owners John Howard, Stewie Nobbs, Ron Byriel and Clive Long it was akin to winning a GROUP 1 such were their celebrations and who could blame them?

Massive sales at the Magic Millions Complex at the Gold Coast starting Thursday, May 17. Some 1189 broodmares and weanlings go up for auction between May 18 and May 25. Then there is a clear out of the complex in preparation for the National Yearling Sale running from May 30 to May 31. There 420 yearlings are catalogued for sale. In all around 1609 thoroughbreds for sale. Massive logistical operation but Magic Millions do it so well. Log on to Magic Millions if you have the urge to check out the catalogues and remember you can bid online providing you are registered and that process is not difficult to complete with MM.

The RJC has some alluring food, beverage and entertainment packages in the pipeline for the fast-approaching Winter Racing Carnival. All the details are available on the RJC Facebook Pages. Also expect an announcement confirmation any day now for a high-profile media and racing man to be the RJC’s guest for the carnival and Calcutta luncheon which would make it a must attend.

Don’t forget mark your diary and book your place at Callaghan Park for the 21st The Girls Grammar Race Day there on Saturday, June 17. The theme is to celebrate the Roaring 20s” and dress accordingly to that vintage. Once again, all the details on the RJC Facebook Pages.

Good luck to the Emerald Jockey Club with its Emerald Cup (1615m) race day on Saturday. The Emerald Service Centre Emerald Cup has lured 11 nominations. Among them the Tom Smith trained and Bear Rawlinson owned Emerald 100 winner from last year in Bayerische. Looks like a terrific race in the making as does the co-feature the Ted Harvey Memorial 2023 Battle of the Bush Emerald Qualifier Open Plate (1100m). Be a big day at Emerald that’s for sure and an even bigger night if Bayerische happens to win.

Race meetings coming up at Callaghan Park – Friday, May 26; Friday, June 2; Saturday, June 17; Friday, June 23 (Tatts Sprint); Sunday, June 25 (Tatts Cup); Friday, July 7 (Rockhampton Newmarket) and Saturday, July 8 (Rockhampton Cup). Plenty on so get into training.

Finally, Rockhampton trainers Clinton Taylor (Harch Road, Bush Diamond); Graeme Green (Just Let It Out, Mistrey Empire); Tim Cook (Brad, Sirfina, Augustawynd) and Kevin Miller (Jeridah) are off and racing at the Townsville TAB races on this Friday. More than likely there will be more than one winner among them as the Rocky trainers have great winning strike rates there. Not as good as at Mackay mind you where they won the entire seven race TAB card just over a week ago.
