This is the first of a weekly pictorial series compiled by Tony McMahon titled ROCKY RACING THROUGH THE YEARS.

The idiom “a picture paints 1000 words” will be the key component to this column featuring Rockhampton racing participants of mainly the past but occasionally the present. When I first came racing at Callaghan Park in June 1988 for the Winter Racing Carnival with a team of horses, I could not help but being impressed by the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s on-course race broadcaster.

His name was Gary Foale, and he had all the attributes of an eloquent professional race caller. A commanding voice, accuracy, passion and the ability to enthuse excitement from his calls to the listeners. Gary had been the resident Rockhampton race broadcaster for a number of years during the eighties and he was heavily involved in numerous facets of the industry. He left broadcasting within a few years of him leaving such an impression on me to pursue an industry in another “horsepower division”- the motor vehicle trade. Unlike so many in the racing industry (me included) Gary Foale has been shy about publicity and never sought it. Nor is he easy to track down as I have tried in vain to speak to him and try to learn more about his career. Regardless, Gary’s contribution to racing in and around Rockhampton deserves to be recognised and recorded.

I have no doubt and believe I am quite qualified to say it, Gary Foale, had he wished much earlier in his career, would have been a success anywhere in Australia as a metropolitan race caller. A humble man, please don’t be embarrassed Gary as my inadequate words fall short of portraying the tale of just how good you were. Furthermore, Gary, you know I would not record these words if I did not mean them. Trust, you enjoyed your birthday this week and what more can I say but resurrect the over galloped old chestnut “thanks for the memories, Gary”, Tony McMahon.
