Jennifer Acton, Tom Acton and Larry Acton spoke eloquently, and with great passion for local racing, at the official naming ceremony of The Acton Stand at Callaghan Park last Friday.

The trio, all current participants in Central Queensland racing, spoke on behalf of the many family members in attendance. They each said the Acton’s were humbled and honoured by the Rockhampton Jockey Club and the Committee’s tribute, which has recognised the family’s contribution to racing in Central Queensland, in such an amazing way.

The Acton family name is now proudly displayed on the public grandstand, and it will be there for future generations to see. A bronze plaque marking the name of the stand was on display at the function and is to be permanently affixed on the building.

William Acton emigrated to Queensland in 1863 and together with his wife Eliza arrived and settled ‘Mt View’ Meadow Flats, Rockhampton in 1868. Within 12 years their children William, Francis, Robert, Tristram, Mary and Thomas were orphaned when both parents died. A few years after World War 1 ended, Robert Acton drew Wilpeena, a 440-acre property in Ballot.

The Acton’s racing interests date back well over a century. In 1926 they started the McKenzie River Picnic Races at ‘Honeycombe’, Dingo and the family’s name has been synonymous with racing ever since.

“Many generations of the Acton families have been actively involved in racing, since first coming to Australia,” Jennifer Acton said. “From Amateur jockeys, racehorse owners and breeders, to Committee members, vice Chairman-and Presidents of various Race Clubs throughout Central Queensland.”

Jennifer Acton acknowledged Tom Acton MBE for his contribution to the RJC and Wilpeena Races and said we must not forget Val and Elizabeth’s contribution as well.

“I have heard a few stories where if a Wedding fell on the day Tom’s horse was racing, he had to attend the races,” she said. “He did, however, make the reception.”

Jennifer said that she and the children Daniel, Jessica, James and their families, acknowledge her late husband Alan for his huge contribution to racing in Central Queensland and afar.

“Apart from his dedication and love for his family and friends, living and breathing country life, he had a great love affair with horse racing,” she said.

“Alan would be so humbled and honoured at the same time, that the Acton Stand is a great tribute to the Acton families for the mark that they have left on the Central Queensland Racing Community.”
