Two Gold Coast features for Mitchell & Anna Power.

Young Rockhampton couple Mitchell and Anna Power are in the enviable position of having the first two horses they have raced together qualify for two $500,000 feature races at the Gold Coast on Saturday week, March 9.

Juvenile filly Sunshinyday, which the couple purchased off the lone minimum bid of $5K at last year’s Magic Millions March Yearling Sales qualified for the rich 2YO Final  by winning the $43,000 Jewel Qualifier 2YO Plate (1100m) at Callaghan Park last Saturday.

Just 24 hours early at Mackay races, the Power’s older “sibling” Acre’s Away qualified for the Jewel 3YO Final (1200m) when the closest of seconds behind Rocky trained In Evidence in the $37K 3YO Qualifier (1200m) at Mackay’s TAB races.

Understandably, the Powers are “over the moon” to have the Tom Smith Rockhampton trained stablemates racing on one the Gold Coast Turf Club’s biggest race meetings of the year.

“It’s pretty special that’s for sure and the odds of this happening would be massive,” Mitchell said trackside amid celebrations at Callaghan Park just after Sunshinyday scored.

Sunshinyday (ch f 2 Extravagant (NZ)-Christmas x Exceed and Excel) was offered on account of Oaklands Stud, Umbrian as Lot 304 on March 21 at the Gold Coast March sale last year and surprisingly attracted very little interest with Michell Power the only bidder.

Breeder, Neville Stewart said he was bewildered by the lack of interest in the filly.

“She had everything going for her and I was quite frankly dumbfounded when only one bid came. At Oaklands, we breed them to sell them, so we accepted the offer and met the market. Believe me it was a losing deal for us but as breeders we are very happy for the Powers that they have done so well already with Sunshinyday”, Neville Stewart said.

From just two starts Sunshiny Day has won $34,200 in prize money which already is a massive windfall over her meagre purchase price.

Oaklands Stud will offer 20 yearlings during the two days of the MM March Sale on March 11 and 12 and not surprisingly Mitchell Power said ‘’I’ll be there having a good look at them”.

As well, that stud along with other high ranking Queensland thoroughbred breeders will have a draft at Rockhampton’s Capricornia Yearling Sale among 110 yearlings on Sunday, April 7 at the Rockhampton Showgrounds.

Power’s bred Acres Away (ch g 3 Top Echelon -Hoywedge x Chosir), a former Bluff trained country winner raced by Mitchell along with his father the CQ race caller Scott Power and friends.

Acres Away has won four of his 10 starts netting $167,725 while an offer from Chinese interests to purchase him some months ago for $300K fell through when the small albeit flashy gelding with a flaxen mane, did not make the strict horse weight requirements of his would-be genuine buyers.

An Eagle Farm, Brisbane winner last August, Acre’s Away will be well in contention for the 3YO Jewel at Aquis Park racetrack on Saturday week, as of course will be the John Wigginton trained In Evidence, also a Brisbane winner and a Magic Millions 2022 sales graduate purchased for $50K.

In Evidence (Ryan Wiggins) beat Acre’s Away at Mackay and trainer Wigginton said late yesterday the Brisbane jockey had retained the ride at the God Coast.

Young trainer Tom Smith has engaged SEQ jockey Les Tilley for both of his Power’s Jewel qualifiers as he has twice won on Acre’s Away while he rode Sunshinyday when a debut second at Rockhampton on February 16.

The Jewel race meeting at the Gold Coast offers over $2M in prize money with Rockhampton’s Master Jame a winner of over $1M in stakes off a $10K MM March yearling purchase price will contesting  the $197,500 Gold Jewel Cup (1400m).

Classy mare, the Clinton Taylor trained Chinny Boom runs in the $197,500 Military Rose Plate (1100m) on the same card.

Annually, a massive contingent of Rockhampton and Central Queensland stakeholders attend the Jewel race meeting and stay on for the two days of MM March Sales and this year will be no exception.
