WALK down MEMORY LANE with Tony McMahon

The running of the 1990 $100,OOO Power’s 2YO Classic (1200m) at Callaghan Park on Saturday April 21 created massive publicity and unprecedented interest on the back of the huge amount of prizemoney on offer. The race was the forerunner to the current DVL Finance Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic (1200m) run on Saturday, April. To put the prizemoney of the 1990 race into perspective, race favourite and subsequent winner the In The Slot filly Johnnycake Girl (Mark Smith Lester) had won her only three starts before the feature yet had just accrued $10,000! In that era there was no bonus prize money such as with QTIS today. 2YO winners at Rockhampton earned about $3300 first prize. However, Johnnycake Girl trained by Allan Jenkinson (still has a horse in training today – Arrarac)  kept the dream alive for owner John Quilty beating Loving Care (John Flanders) and Painted Red (Mark Unwin). Stewart Park, Alton Downs based stallion In The Slot went on to produce the 1991, 1992 and 1995 2YO Classic winners in Bonslot, Slotalot and True Slot. TONY MCMAHON
