Carly-Mae Pye Remembered Today

A solitary bunch of flowers was left at the mounting yard gate at Callaghan Park today, marking the 10th anniversary of the tragic loss of Rockhampton jockey Carly-Mae Pye.

Apricot pink and white peonies filled a beautiful bouquet placed alongside the racetrack.

Carly-Mae died from injuries she sustained in a fall during a jump out (an unofficial race trial from the starting gates) on this day in 2014.

The Rockhampton Jockey Club holds the Carly-Mae Pye Memorial each Caulfield Cup Day. On Saturday at Callaghan Park, trophies will be presented to the winning connections of her race, by local trainer Tim Cook.

A role model for young riders, Carly-Mae climbed the ranks to become a state champion equestrian rider and a leading female apprentice jockey in the CQ region. During her brief career which commenced in 2006, she rode almost 200 winners across Queensland.

RJC chairman Rob Carr said Pye will always be remembered. “Losing her life on our track was tragic, and it hit our racing community hard,” he said. “The RJC and trainer Tim Cook, are proud to keep Carly’s memory alive with a yearly trophy race run.”
