Thoroughbred racing is delivering big bucks to the Central Queensland economy.

The latest independent economic data, released this week, has once again confirmed the industry’s vital contribution to the economy, with racing in whole of Queensland generating over $2.5 billion per annum in value added contribution in 2024/25.

Racing across the state supports 13,994 full-time equivalent jobs, with 48,682 participants involved in the three codes, thoroughbreds, harness and greyhounds, more broadly.

In a report prepared by IER on the size and scope of the Queensland Racing Industry, the Central Queensland region consisting of 12 thoroughbred racing clubs and one greyhound racing club, was responsible for generating $78.7 million in value added contribution to gross state product, during the reporting year.

This represented 3.1% of the industry’s total contribution to the state. Between them the two codes raced 145 race meetings, with 1,255 races. 53,437 people attended the races during the year.
